Thunder Cloud Studio partnered with Snowprint Studios to produce a series of cinematic trailers for Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus, a popular mobile strategy game in the Warhammer universe. The collaboration began with Machine of War, premiered during Warhammer Skulls, and led to Blood Angels and Genestealer Cults, celebrating key milestones of the game. The partnership continues today, showcasing Thunder Cloud’s steady creative collaboration and expertise in enhancing the game through art and cinematic storytelling.

Defining Each Chapter

For the Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus series, Thunder Cloud Studio served as Snowprint’s key creative and production partner, delivering full 3D cinematic animation and trailer production. Building on this foundation, the team maintained visual consistency with the game through a well-structured pipeline and rapid feedback cycles, ensuring high-level production quality within tight deadlines.

To begin, in Machine of War, Thunder Cloud handled the entire cinematic pipeline – from proposal to final compositing – blending CGI, augmented gameplay, and motion graphics to create an immersive reveal.

Next, Blood Angels focused on character expression and emotion. Thunder Cloud developed character lookdev, rigging, and environment layouts to highlight the personalities of the Blood Angels heroes while preserving the distinct Warhammer 40K: Tacticus style.

Finally, Genestealer Cults introduced a grittier theme centered on rebellion and ambush tactics. Industrial settings and improvised weapons captured the raw energy of this new faction.

Behind the Scenes

Each trailer followed a streamlined cinematic workflow using Maya for lookdev and rigging, Unreal Engine for rendering, and After Effects for VFX and post-production.
Production stages spanned from lookdev and rigging to animation, VFX, and compositing. The team’s animation flow and transitions stood out, earning client praise for their seamless motion and cinematic editing.
General refinements involved coordinating camera movements across multiple action-heavy scenes. Another important focus was balancing cinematic pacing and continuity across complex action sequences while maintaining visual clarity and storytelling impact.
Quality was ensured through multi-layer QA reviews, render tests, and close collaboration with Snowprint Studios, whose detailed feedback helped refine each final sequence.
