Project Overview
Nova Match is a mobile Match-3 casual game developed by Soom Development and released in 2024. After launch, the studio decided to overhaul the entire 2D visual direction to elevate quality, clarity, and market competitiveness.
Thunder Cloud Studio joined during this transition as the dedicated 2D game art outsourcing partner. We handled of the new 2D art production and rebuilt the visual system from the ground up across characters, environments, UI, marketing visuals, and narrative cutscenes. Our workflow ensured every asset aligned with the updated direction while integrating smoothly into game framework.
2D Game Art Outsourcing Scope for Mobile Game Production
Thunder Cloud Studio handled full-cycle 2D art production for the game visual direction. We built the visual system from core identity elements to gameplay and marketing assets, establishing a cohesive art foundation across the entire project.
Our responsibilities included:
- Character design: main character design and expression set, supporting character design
- 2D environment design: world map and menu backgrounds
- 2D UI visuals: modular 2D game assets including matchable items, buttons, pop-ups, and screen panels
- Key marketing visuals: store icon and store preview images
- Narrative cutscene animations
Our option-driven workflow and reusable-friendly asset structure support all deliverables for clean integration, consistent naming, and long-term scalability inside a live product.
Mobile Game Art Production Challenges
The project required the production of more than 200 assets across multiple categories. This scale demanded strict control over visual language to ensure batch consistency in shapes, color systems, rendering depth, and stylistic details across the entire product.
In parallel, we had to maintain strong mobile optimization standards. Every asset needed controlled texture weight, clean silhouettes, and clear hierarchy for small screens. We balanced visual richness with performance efficiency to ensure stability, readability, and scalability on mobile devices.

2D Game Art Outsourcing Strategy & Production Solution
To address scale and consistency simultaneously, we relied on two core principles that are imprinted in our 2D game art workflow: structured visual tiering and layered quality assurance.
Structured Visual Tiering
With 200+ assets across categories, we introduced clear visual tiers based on gameplay importance. This allowed intentional detail allocation while preserving a unified visual language.
- Main focus: main character – expression sheets, narrative cutscenes with 2D loops, and the world map.
- Gameplay: UI elements, items, and menu backgrounds prioritized clarity. We refined cutscene sequences and reduced unnecessary panels to align with the story and budget.
- Support tier: marketing visuals – store icons and previews focused on small-size readability.
This structure maintained consistency in proportions, color logic, and rendering depth across the project.
QA Layers & Production Control
For Thunder Cloud Studio, QA layers are the core safeguard of quality and consistency. We reinforced tiering with dedicated structured review checkpoints, and every asset passed structured reviews before approval.
Key validation checkpoints:
- Cross-category visual cohesion
- Readability on small screens
- Mobile technical compliance
- Naming and file consistency
This layered control ensured consistent standards across 200+ assets, reduced rework, and protected long-term scalability.
