Case Study: Building the Stylized World of Eon Rush

Eon Rush is an upcoming co-op action RPG that blends stylized fantasy, sci fi and primal themes. Thunder Cloud Studio partners with Eon Rush Studio to support key areas of the game’s art development. The team contributes to game character design, animation and VFX, while also assembling all the environments and hundreds of 3D game-ready assets.

This involves building optimized game ready characters, creating varied animation sets and developing stylized effects for the entire character lineup. The ongoing partnership focuses on delivering scalable, engine ready art assets that align with the evolving needs of the project.

Eon Rush characters in Hipoly

Eon Rush features a growing roster of characters and creatures. The team creates each one through 3D game character design, modelling, texturing, rigging and animation. Each hero also needs multiple combat effects. These effects support abilities and movement. They also increase the workload as the roster expands.

During production, the client set a tight timeline for a polished Gamescom demo. The schedule pushed all teams. Thunder Cloud Studio responded quickly. The team prioritized tasks and shared technical guidance. They solved unexpected issues. They also enabled artists to work directly with the client during the final stages.

As a result, the workflow became more efficient. The team delivered the assets required for the demo on time.

Core Art Development

Thunder Cloud Studio handled the full production flow across characters, animation and VFX with a focus on efficient, engine ready delivery. Once concepts were provided, the team built game ready characters through high poly sculpting, topology optimization, controlled edge flow for clean deformation, UV layout, texture baking and rigging designed for predictable performance in Unity. Base mesh refinement and joint focused topology guidance were applied according to Thunder Cloud Studio stylized production standards. The animation process followed a structured workflow that moved from reference collection and stepped key blocking to timing calibration, spline refinement and validation inside Unity, ensuring each motion behaved consistently in game.

VFX shaped much of each hero’s identity, especially for characters like Fallen Snow. Effects were developed using a combination of Houdini simulations and Unity particle systems to produce stylized ice and wind driven visuals with reliable in-game readability. Early lookdev tests were carried out under varied lighting angles using simplified meshes to confirm clarity before full production.

For environments, the team focused on assembling the client’s whitebox layouts, modelling props, integrating hero assets and making targeted technical adjustments to preserve visual consistency across all arenas. This also required managing a large volume of scene elements and hundreds of in-game assets that shaped the overall maps. Props were aligned using consistent pivot orientation and scale matching the whitebox layout, and uniform texel density checks ensured a cohesive stylized presentation.

Workflow Architecture

Thunder Cloud Studio applied dedicated QA checkpoints across topology, textures, rig stress tests and engine side functionality to maintain stability throughout production. Shader graphs were kept clean, and unused parameters were converted to static values to reduce complexity during QA. Feedback loops remained open within each production stage as long as requests stayed within scope, while smaller notes were handled during later passes.

Parallel production lanes were organized for characters and VFX based on priority and deadlines, supported by consistent turnaround on new briefs within 24 hours.

Project Highlights

VFX Across All Characters

Every character in Eon Rush includes an extensive VFX package that introduces significant creative and technical demands during production. Each hero requires multiple stylized effects to support abilities, movement and combat clarity. These effects combine elements such as impact bursts, elemental trails and ability driven visuals, all tuned for stability and readability during fast paced co-op-action RPG gameplay.

Technical Support for Gamescom

Thunder Cloud Studio supported the client with technical feedback, task prioritization and fixes during the Gamescom milestone. Artists worked directly with the client to increase efficiency during the final push.

The Gamescom 2023 demo received positive reactions from players and validated the visual direction of Eon Rush. The client continued to expand the production scope and provided positive feedback throughout the partnership.

The collaboration between Thunder Cloud Studio and Eon Rush Studio shows how a focused workflow and stylized art direction support a full cycle game character design in a growing game title. By aligning closely with the client’s goals, adapting quickly to new briefs and maintaining consistent quality across characters, environments, animation and VFX, the Thunder Cloud Studio team helped shape a cohesive and visually driven gameplay experience. The continued expansion of the project’s art requirements shows the trust and momentum behind the partnership, setting a strong path for ongoing development efforts.
